I took a leap of faith and bought a 200,000-mile Audi A8 for an ice racing adventure, and it exceeded all my expectations! But was it a wise choice?
As an avid car enthusiast, I live for the thrill of driving adventures, especially when there's a chance to hit the tracks or explore snowy roads. So, when I heard about the ice races in upstate New York, I knew I couldn't miss out.
These races are a bargain at just $70 per event, and they're a rare opportunity to compete without breaking the bank or needing a heavily modified car. But, due to mild winters, ice racing had been off the table for the past four years.
I had already sold my Mazda MX-5 Miata, which I once cherished for these events, and replaced it with a Range Rover. But fate had other plans. This winter, the lakes froze over, and the races were back on.
With a sudden urge to join the fun, I impulsively bought a 2014 Audi A8 L from Facebook Marketplace in Vermont, just a day before the race. But why an Audi A8, you ask? Well, it's a bold choice, to say the least.
The A8 is a massive limousine, weighing a hefty 4,400 pounds, and it's not your typical ice racer. It's complex, with air suspension and electronics that could be a headache. But I wanted something different, and the Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system had proven itself in past races. Plus, it already had winter tires, saving me precious time.
In an ideal world, I'd have opted for a smaller Audi like the A4. But with less than two days to find a car, I embraced the challenge of sliding a luxury sedan on ice. And boy, was it worth it!
The A8's road manners are impressive, offering a smooth ride and a host of features. Despite its age and mileage, it still feels luxurious. However, it's not without its quirks, like the wind noise from the sunroof and a few mechanical issues.
On race day, the Audi faced its true test. Competing in the 'Street Legal' class, it went up against lighter, more agile cars. I wasn't aiming for victory, especially with the A8's weight and traction control challenges. But the Quattro system and the supercharged V6's power surprised me, and I managed some impressive four-wheel drifts, securing two third-place finishes.
While it might not be the best ice racer I've driven, the A8's performance and comfort have won me over. I'm even considering keeping it after the racing season. It's a unique blend of performance and luxury, and I can't wait to see what else it can do.
