Get ready, tennis fans! ESPN is gearing up for the 2026 Australian Open, and they're shaking things up with a fresh face leading the charge. Malika Andrews and Katie George are set to co-host the coverage of the first Grand Slam of the year, a move that signals a bold step for ESPN's broadcasting team.
Katie George will kick things off, hosting during the tournament's initial week, while Malika Andrews will take over for the second week, culminating in the championship weekend. This dual-host approach highlights the rising stars' versatility, as both are already juggling multiple sports assignments within ESPN.
Andrews, who recently signed a multi-year contract extension, has been rapidly expanding her portfolio. She's not just a basketball aficionado; she's also a key player in NBA Countdown, NBA Today, WNBA Countdown, and the NBA Draft. At just 30 years old, she's already ESPN's lead NBA studio host, a role she took on in the 2023-24 season, succeeding Mike Greenberg.
This Australian Open marks Andrews' debut in tennis coverage. She joined ESPN back in 2018 and quickly climbed the ranks, making her national television debut during the 2020 NBA Bubble. In 2022, she made history as the first woman to host the NBA Draft.
ESPN's Vice President of Production, Linda Schulz, expressed excitement, stating, “We are especially thrilled to welcome longtime tennis fan and accomplished host, Malika Andrews.” She added that the coverage will offer a vast perspective on the sport, with Andrews and Chris Eubanks joining the team.
Katie George's role in the Australian Open continues her journey of covering various sports since joining ESPN in 2019. She has experience in college football, basketball, Formula 1, volleyball, softball, and lacrosse. Currently, she works college football sidelines and handles NBA sideline duties.
George herself emphasizes the importance of versatility, stating, “I think it’s important, especially in a role like mine, to show your versatility and to not just cover one sport because then I think you can become expendable.”
The play-by-play duties will be handled by Chris Fowler, Chris McKendry, Patrick McEnroe, Jason Goodall, and Mike Monaco. The analysis will come from a star-studded lineup including John McEnroe, Chris Evert, Wozniacki, and more. Kris Budden will be reporting live from Melbourne Park.
But here's where it gets controversial... Notably absent from the lineup are Pam Shriver, Darren Cahill, Brad Gilbert, and Rennae Stubbs, who were all part of ESPN’s 2025 Australian Open coverage. Cahill currently coaches Jannik Sinner, the two-time defending champion.
The 2026 Australian Open is set to begin with qualifiers from January 11-15. The main draw will run from January 17-28, with semifinals on January 29-30. The women’s singles championship will be held on January 31, followed by the men’s singles championship on February 1.
